"Happy, happy Halloween, Halloween, Silver Shamrock! It's almost time, kids. The clock is ticking. Be in front of your TV sets for the horrorthon. Don't miss it and don't forget to wear your masks. The clock is ticking, it's almost time".

The House Of The Devil

Modern horror master Ti West has crafted and directed better horror movies (The Sacrament, Pearl, X or even his short though explosive Second Honeymoon section in V/H/S), but none of them (placing aside the latter) is more suitable for a Halloween night than The House Of The Devil.

The old 80's feeling permeating every frame, in addition to elements from different horror classics like When A Stranger Calls, Black Christmas and Rosemary's Baby, constitute the most Halloweenesque entry in the sturdy Ti West's catalogue. Make sure to give it a shot in order to check Greta Gerwig's appearance; yes, Lady Bird and Barbie's director provides a blasting performance (literally).

Barbarian

By any means possible I will address this spot without spoiling any details (damn, I even made sure of offering a trailer that tried as hard as me).

The movie's biggest strength lies on its unpredictability and infamous plot twist (and suspended cliffhanger); out of tons of modern horror movies which claim to be novel and different, this is one that does live up to the billing. There are a couple of exercises to test Barbarian's alleged unexpected unforseeability; stop the movie at the 20:36 mark and, basing your thoughts upon what was seen previously, try to unfold the following occurrences. Basically the same can be done at 33:00; in both cases any conceivable thoughts are extremely likely to not match the final result.

Halloween III: Season Of The Witch

Allow me to belabor all the details that make Halloween III: Season of the Witch not only the most overlooked horror movie of its generation but also of all time.

To begin with, the setting is unbeatable; I would even go beyond and dare to say that its depiction of Halloween is superior to the one of Halloween by John Carpenter. Moreover, the soundtrack is top notch, Suspiria-level without hesitation. And being the second best movie in the Halloween franchise assures its credentials. People looking down on it because of being Myersless should go check it again without expecting The Shape to appear in a movie that has nothing to do with it.

V/H/S

What else could be said when addressing the V/H/S franchise? I have covered all the entries up to the last one (V/H/S 99) and, placing apart a couple of them, it has become in my favorite horror franchise.

V/H/S is not the best in the whole series (the second entry has that spot assured and by a wide margin); in spite of this, the first installment is the perfect choice for a Halloween night. Just a handful of times I have had the pleasure of beholding something this amusing when diving into horror. Worth-mentioning is the fact that my two favorite segments in the franchise are here (31/10/98 and Amateur Night). I like you.

Deadstream

I do admit that out of all the best-of-2022-horror-movies this one was the one to which I deposited my lowest expectations beforehand. It goes without saying that I was pleasingly suprised while watching it and once I was done.

Deadstream is a movie with no filters that has as biggest flaw (and virtue) the elimination of middle points in regard to the two main aspects it makes use of: comedy and horror. There are plenty of moments that are assured to give you a good laugh and some others that might make you want to place your sight aside. This movie goes from dead serious and horrifying to goofy and surreal in no time. I just wish the transitions or parts where both characteristics collide were smoother and better carried out. Nonetheless, the movie is a must-watch on Halloween.

The Monster Project

Among the many requirements that movies needed to fulfill to be featured on this list the one with the fondest consideration (besides of horror, of course) was the rewatchability. Movies that are not that fun and cannot be in your yearly Halloween rotation were simply no choices.

The Monster Project could easily be the most thrilling in the entirety of the list. Tapping into its everpresent and rather immersive format and its protagonists-antagonists, this film is a ride, a joyful and entertaining one. Have you enjoyed Found Footage flicks dealing with vampires? What about demons? And skinwalkers? Well, here you have the three in one package.

XX

This female-driven flick (all of its parts were directed by women, including the highly renowned Karyn Kusama) from the boom of anthology horror films in the 2010's offers something rarely seen in short segments constituting a whole: depth.

Unlike the V/H/S series, Trick 'R Treat, The Fear Footage and other alike movies that grasp the concept and execution, XX offers less chaotic pieces; what these pieces lack in thrills they make up for subtle and deep clues to create tension and ramp up the uneasiness. Into the bargain it can be mentioned that, though less coherent that the aforementioned movies, this one supplies more variety.

The Invitation

Karyn Kusama was stated to be at the helm of one of the segments in the previous spot; here, she had the opportunity to be in the driving seat.

The Invitation was my favorite horror movie for a few years in a row. Without necessarily being complex, it manages to hold its ground and provide a couple of twists. It showcases Kary's most prominent directing chops; a very straightforward film relying on its characters' inner-conflict, added up to some ambiguity thrown here and there and a very competent visual depiction.

Marui Video

Marui Video was a sort of an underground phenomenon in the horror movie world. Slightly relying on the cursed tape trait that guarantees more views than the average horror film, this movie follows on the steps of the gigantic Noroi: The Curse.

This South Korean little sister to Noroi tries hard (way hard I would say) to emulate the caracteristics that made its big sister the portent of movie it is; a first slow-burn segment used to state and unfold all the clues that lead to the solution of its enigma and an apotheosic second segment. It does not reach Noroi's heights and is not as well-crafted, but it is guaranteed to offer a couple of good scares within its 127-minute runtime.

WNUF Halloween Special

With the fondest devotion and emphasis I endorse giving a shot to this jewel right here. How is it possible that a 2013 movie evokes an 80's feeling in a stronger manner than Halloween III: Season of the Witch (1982) itself?

Not even Deadstream was able to replicate the formula to this extent and provide the exact portion of comedy and horror to create an almost perfect Halloween movie. I am positive that movies like Hell House LLC, The Houses October Built or the previously brought up Deadstream took note of all its grandiose essence and execution.
