The main reason several people do not appreciate or embrace horror is because they may not feel enjoyment or amusement in "suffering" or enduring scares and not pleasant situations.

In some occasions this might be traced back to one's childhood in which most people experience their very first horror movie; depending on the one you managed to see/watch (or your responsible or irreponsible parents let you get your eyes on) the outcome will be whether you end up turning out a horror fan or hater.

The following are the prime examples of someone who was traumatized by these films and ended up loving them.

Dancing Ghost - Kairo (2001)

Age when I watched it: 9

Is it a good horror movie?: Totally. Among the finest in the almighty J-Horror

If you have been following this site, you may have noticed that I am truly fond of J-Horror (and Asian horror in general). We have been bestowed with some of the greatest and most terrifying pieces of work in horror cinema by our Japanese fellows; films such as Noroi: The Curse, Audition, Ju-On (which we are about to address in a couple of spots) and Kairo do nothing but prove my aforementioned point.

The latter contains what I perceive as the scene that has affected me the most in my life span. The impact reached to the point in which I cannot see a person walking towards me or my direction without thinking about it. Clearly, the fear now is not as deep as it used to be, but still. The scene itself is a masterful example of how to execute a horror sequence without relying in nothing but sheer tension and great acting and pacing.

A Video For The Girlfriend - Rest Stop (2006)

Age when I watched it: 9

Is it a good horror movie?: No. It is overtly stupid and has clichés in great abundance.

Most movies featured in this list are utterly stupid and lack qualities to qualify as even decent horror movies. Rest Stop is clearly the epitome of this. Nonetheless, it is in the list for a reason (a couple actually).

Nothing about it is original at all. It is even clichesque in regard to the clichés it makes use of. This is noticeable now; back then this movie was the most abominable thing ever created. 9-year old children are not supossed to be beholding something like Rest Stop (despite how poor it performs quality-wise). The scene in which, and I feel free to spoil it because I do not want you to even attempt to watch it (besides the extract alluded to), our killer and abuser leaves a camera with a very graphic and disturbing video for his main victim (the protagonist) was drilled into my memory and took me a while to manage to cope with it. Not even the absolutely dumb and uninentionally funny scene that follows it could make me feel less distressed and appalled.

CAUTION: After the extract  I am talking about it can be found an extremely goofy scene that might throw you off.

Good Night - Ju-On (2002)

Age when I watched it: 7

Is it a good horror movie?: Definitely. A rare species in this list.

Feel free to skip right to the 53rd minute to watch the scene I am mentioning. However, behold the whole movie if possible.

Blowtorch - Art Of The Devil 2 (2005)

Age when I watched it: 9

Is it a good horror movie?: Absolutely not. Do yourself a favor and just watch the scene I am talking about.

I recall going shopping with my mom and being obssessed with passing by the movie section just to grasp them and check out what was "new" or fresh. By this point I had already seen some gruesome ad scary movies and known about the existence of some others.

I did not get to watch Saw until later on but I was well aware that it was deemed as one of the most brutal horror movies ever. Picture my face when I read on the cover of this movie a review by a lame horror website (such as mine) that had the following between lines: "So scary that it makes Saw look like Sesame Street". Totally drawn in I managed to watch it after a year and I admit it had plenty of horrible scenes. However, it is nothing but a bunch of gibberish and nonsense violence. Very much like the Guinea Pig series with less shock impact and with a bigger budget.

Skip to the 1:27:20 mark. I do not recommend watching this movie; it is nothing but a bunch of senseless and boring violence.

Rachel? - Pet Sematary (1989)

Age when I watched it: 7

Is it a good horror movie?:

The Rack- Saw 3 (2006)

Age when I watched it: 10

Is it a good horror movie?: Not at all. Before Saw X this one was the last "watchable" entry, but it is quite substandard

My introduction to the Saw franchise was premature and it was not the ideal way of approaching the saga, not in the slightest. Aware of its notoriety through YouTube videos I dove upon it having as a starting point the third entry in the series.

Few movies have been as gut-wretching and hard to digest for me as Saw 3 was. Nonetheless, despite having been scared shitless, it was a right hit at a very right time; I became a huge fan after watching it. Now, when what was played before my eyes was the scene of The Rack, I had to pause the movie before and after watching to try to get myself together. Not many movie moments have shocked me that way before or since.

I Am God - The Fourth Kind (2009)

Age when I watched it: 12

Is it a good horror movie?: It is. Not as great as I remember it was, but definitely worth-watching

Bitting A Donna - Cujo (1983)

Age when I watched it: 7

Is it a good horror movie?:

Let us be honest, Stephen King is not that much a good horror writer. Few literary bodies of work have been this thoroughly adapted into cinema and seldom is the time in which it does not live up to the source material or ever surpases it.

The movie adptation of Cujo unfolds better than the story written by King and it is a mediocre movie at best. Now, putting aside Stephen's abilities with writing and crafting, neither the Cujo potrayed in the movie nor in the book are truly scary. Why is it here then? Well, have some empathy and think about what you would think at 7 if you, an innocent pet lover, watched a movie about a massive dog going bonkers and attacking people on a killing spree. Few nights getting to sleep soundly after experiencing it.

Needle Pit - Saw 2 (2005)

Age when I watched it: 10

Is it a good horror movie?: More of a decent movie. The franchise has only one good horror movie and this is not it

Previously stated was the fact that my starting point in the Saw saga was the third installment. The film that followed that one was the one right here.

Saw 2, in all its disgusting premise and means of causing fear and repulsion, was way more bearable than the third movie. The second feature opted for a more psychological and atmospherical approach. This does not mean the movie was not violent and did not have its highights; people getting shot; people burning to death; spikey sticks right to the head and slit throats with hacksaws do clarify that. However, the moment that makes the list is the needle pit. In spite of not being lethal or extremely graphic, the pure and mere concept was enough to get me. And it got me right.

Toy Factory - Chucky 2 (1990)

Age when I watched it: 6

Is it a good horror movie?:
