Among the countless aspects in life that are deemed subjective just a handful are as controversial and discussion-inducing as horror.
What might someone consider appalling or ghastling? The answers surely would vary sufficently to easily lose the scope of possibilities.
Taking into account the aforementioned lines I will sink into what I consider scary leaning toward the paranormal and psychological purview; out of the picture have been taken images depicting animal cruelty or the consequences of despicable aspects such as narcotrafic or war.
A Curious Selfie (2014)
Some time in this decade (allegedly early 2010's) this selfie was found in a mother's cellphone. No big deal, right? Well, it is because she didn't take the picture and her son can be seen deeply asleep in the background.
Who (or what) took it? An answer that this woman might never want to know whatsoever.
Why is it scary to me? If you are empathetic and can walk yourself through the situation I am pretty sure you would freak out the time you see this in your phone knowing nothing about that thing sleeping beside your son (or yourself in case you do not have children).
The Shape (2010's)
What do you think a demon may look like? There have been several potrayals and representations on media and art and, out of them, the vast majority seems to agree on certain details. Close your eyes and grasp the first picture you stumble upon with. Does it look like this?
This picture, taken inside a deceased grandmother's house (who presumably was abusive toward her daughter and used to practice black magic) depicts what the photographer, the granddaughter's couple, claims to be a demon.
Why is it scary to me? Imagine waking up to this. Right after hearing strange noises you turn around and, with all the background previously provided, see this. Attached you have the same picture through a couple of filters to make it look a little bit prettier.
The Feral Child (1970)
This is the pseudonym given to Genie Wiley and her well-covered and documented event; one of many in the vastly infamous American story. Her background is more saddening and upsetting than scary. Shortly after turning 10 months old Genie Wiley started undergoing an inhumane case of abuse and social isolation.
Her abusive father kept her locked and tied up for almost 13 years. When she was found, she was incapable of uttering a single word and could not walk properly. California's state took over the case and "provided" help; it is safe to say that instead of being treated as a human being she became a subject of study. Her current whereabouts are not certain whatsoever.
Why is it scary to me? Because of all the appalling events she underwent, Genie moved erratically and could only utter moans and grunts as means of communication. Picture her approaching you pleading for help and you, certainly scared and saddened, witnessing the atrocious effects of human cruelty.
La Séquestrée de Poitiers (1901)
Extremely alike in terms of atrocity with the previous entry, the main differences are the seclusion's time span and the parental fgure perpetrating the deed. Having lived a priviliged life for 26 years, Blanche Monnier spent the following 25 secluded in a room in her own house living among feces, rotten food and worms.
Her mother had kept her locked and isolated for a quarter of century. The government received an anonymous letter and traced the whereabouts to her house. This is what the police saw the moment her door was opened:
Why is it scary to me? Not only Blanche's tragic story but also her appereance make the picture a overwhelming experience. She weighed 25 kg and had a thick crust of feces. The expression on her face says it all.
This is her before she was held captive.
The Sacrament (1978)
How powerful can the word of a human be? Basically as powerful as the interlocutor's belief. The mass suicide at Jonestown is as infamous as the number of victims claimed following Jim Jones' words.
918 people died poisoned (some of them against their will on gun point) as Jim Jones preached the gospel and asserted to be a God's emissary seeking eternal life for their community.
Why is it scary to me? I abhor most aspects regarding religion and, besides, cults are one of the very few things in life that make me truly scared. Now picture the horrible death of almost a thousand people (including babies and children) after consuming cyanide just because by giving up their lives they would be able to reach eternal life.
Make sure to check out The Sacrament; undoubtedly, one of the best found footage movies in recent memory and a very close insight on this event.
Teratoma (2000's)
Teratoma are tumors that can be found mainly in genitalia or in the ovary and testicle. Diseases tend to be something scary for most people. What makes Teratoma stand out above the several creepy and terrifying diseases and conditions ut there?
Well, without further ado there you go:
Why is it scary to me? Teratoma can be as gruesome as it gets; they are capable of growing hair, teeth and producing tissue, muscles and even organs (such as eyes). One might be developing inside of you as you read this post.
Nope (2010's)
Were you part of the Randonautica's success? If so, where has it led you to? Urban exploration has been an ongoing trend for many years and Randonautica was gundpowder for its reinvigoration.
Mentioning Randonautica was a way of setting the context for the next picture. During a routinary scroll for an experienced explorer he noticed a seemingly abandoned and run down property.
Inside the fresh decorations made him think it was not abandoned at all; having the courage to take a picture before fleeing speaks volumes of this guy's commitement to his followers.
Why is it scary to me? As I have stated before, cults are a nope in al the nope departments for me. Had it been me the one in this building, you would not have a picture to behold. Create a vivid scene that fits into this outcome.
Anneliese Michel (1975)
A highly-renowned case in the paranormal purview was Anneliese's case more than 45 years ago. So famous that a movie was filmed based on it (indeed, The Exorcism of Emily Rose).
Due to the interest from the media it drew, it has to be the best documented case of alleged demonic possession. Dozens of pictures were taken during the 10 months and 67 exorcisms she had to endure, and the following might be the scariest of them all.
Why is it scary to me? The picture by itself is frightening enough. However, because of how well documented the case is, it is inevitable that I replicate the audios recorded with the pictures in my mind. Check out the pictures and the audios and you will get why I am saying this.
Sleeping With The Baby (2010's)
Baby monitors are the source from where appalling imagery has been extracted. A family was soundly sleeping when the alarm in the monitor went off.
They were expecting to see the baby awake and moving; instead, they had a glimpse of "someone" sleeping right next to the baby. Few things could possibly be as fear-inducing as this.
Why is it scary to me? If you were to see this in the room of your baby, what would you do? Could you sleep properly after an incident like this one? What if something like this sleeps with you regularly and you have no way of knowing it? Try setting a camera at night.
Big Brother? Sauron? (2008)
Regarding the question mentioned in the introductory part of this post I stated as means of approach paranormal and psychological concerns. The latter is strongly related of what is capable of troubling and affecting your mind.
I simply cannot think of something fulfilling those requirements in a better and more grandiose way than the outer space. So far beyond our comprehension lie countless aspects that a slightly coherent description would not be possible. This picture taken by NASA through its Hubble Space Telescope depicts what your psyche might label as a terrifying and monumental eye.
Why is it scary to me? Pareidolia certainly causes people to see faces and patterns where there are none. Nevertheless, a human's thought process possesses the ability to sabotage itself. Picture yourself close enough to see this phenomena in all its grandiosity without going totally crazy and realizing that you are nothing but a meaningless piece of matter capable of beholding something that you cannot fully comprehend. And that would not suffice.
